Another Cyclist Knocked down in Dublin by HGV.

A Woman Cyclist 27 Year Old was Knocked down and seriously Hurt at the Junction of Crumlin Road and Parnell Road last Night Saturday at 11 pm by an Articulated Truck and is Serious but Stable in St Jame's Hospital. That is the Second Accident involving a HGV and a Cyclist in little under a Week,what is going on. What are the Police doing,why are they not Enforcing the no HGV's in Dublin City.

New Dublin Vélib Bikes Yesterday.Saturday 19th Sept 09

Dublin's New Bike Vélib http//dublinbike.ie is Grand but there is very little Bike Infrastructure to back it up with,small narrow Cycle Lanes and a Strong Danger of being Doored. Also they took away some ordinary Bike Parking in Order to put in these Vélib Bikes Stations. Notably on Princes Street and somebody told me also on Capel Street at the Bridge. There is very little Bike Parking around the City as it is without them taking it away to Accomodate these Vélib Bikes.

Cyclist Killed on Wellington Quay Dublin this Morning by Artic Truck.

A 51 Year Old Male Cyclist Knocked down and Killed by Articulated Truck at 8.20am on Wellington Quay in Dublin this Morning He Died on way to St Jame's Hospital. The Truck was on a Straight Road and According to the Picture seems to have been caught between a Parked Hi Ace style Van and the Artic Truck.I dont know the Details so I am only Surmising that this Happened I do not know who was at Fault .These Trucks are supposed to be Banned from the City now since they put in the Port Tunnel several Years ago with the Exception of a couple going to the Major Shops with a Permit. It rarely happens now that a Cyclist is Killed so this makes it all the more Tragic. Story Courtesy of the http//www.rtenews.ie Web Site. The Road was blocked for several Hours and Traffic Diverted and is now Opened.

Cyclists be careful out there especially Newbies,until the Dublin City Council puts in a Safe Infrastructure of Dedicated Cycle Lanes and when Drivers Learn to share the Road with other Vulnerable Users we have to be Vigilant and look to our Left for Doors Opening and to our Right for Clumsy Motorists not seeing us. Watch Especially at Corners for Traffic turning,do not be Tempted to rush past them as it could be fatal. My Extreme Condolences to the Family of This Man that got Killed this Morning.

Dublin Cycling Campaign Meeting, Tonight.

It just occurred to me that Tonight I was supposed to be going to the D.C.C. Meeting in Smock Ally Café Temple Bar. It went right out of my Head,it is very Annoying. Now I will have to catch up on what is Happening on the Web Site ,it is Maddening. I will have to wait another Month unless there is another meeting about something in the meantime.

Sunday Spin to the South side of Dublin Bay.

Sunday Yesterday the Weather was so good I decided to go off on a spin on my Bike. As I am always going to Howth I decided for a change to go to the South side of Dublin Bay to Dunleary/Dunlaoghaire and to Dalky. For a moment as I was Cycling along the Coast at Monkstown I imagined I was in the Cote D'Azure it was so nice.

Dublin City Council is going to put in a Dedicated Cycleway next Year starting from Rathmines Road ,along the Grand Canal then over the New Sam Beckett Bridge to meet up with the Cycle Track at Fairview Park. At least it is a start,I hope they will put in more Dedicated Cycle Lanes in Future. I would rather a more Direct Route through the City instead of this Circuitous one. Like from Rathmines Rd down Camden street then O ' connell St then Dromcondra to Dublin Airport. I attended a Meeting Tonight Tuesday in Seomra Spraoi , 10 Belvedere Court D1 for a proposed Critical Mass Ride through Dublin on the 25th of September possibility of it starting at 6 pm GMT and Assembling at the Memorial Arch outside St Stephens Green. It will highlight the position of Cyclists in Dublin and show what a Healthy Lifestyle it is. Possibility of it going along the Grand Canal ,finally Ending in one of the Parks like the Phoenix Park or the Community Gardens on Sth Circular Road and have a Picnic Hopefully there will be Music,Bring Sambos and something Nice to Drink. I dont know all the Details yet.It will be a Work in progress,People will be printing Leaflets and Finalising things.There will be an E Mail Site on Google and other Sites shortly. Further News will follow shortly. Dublin Cycle Campaign,Social Cycle, Royal Canal Way & Farmleigh.

It was a very Windy Changeable Day Although not Cold it looked like it might Rain with the occasional Drop coming down every so often. We Assembled at the Arch in the IFSC,Financial Services Centre beside the CHQ Building in ST Georges Dock at 11 am on Sunday Morning. We Waited to see if some more Stragglers would turn up until 11.20 am and then headed off. There was 13 and one Toddler on His Fathers Bike on His Lap. Our Leader and Pathfinder on the Tour was a Norwegian Chap with a Map and Book of the Towpath System who Lives in Dublin for Years .Before we where out of the IFSC one Member had to have his Tyre blown up a bit, I provided the Pump.The Rear Entrance was Blocked so we had to Exit by Amiens St then headed up the Nth Strand Road and Accessed the Royal Canal at Charleville Mall.

We Encountered these Barriers that the Dublin City Council put across the Path every so often to keep the Yobs from Driving on the Towpath. These are 10 metre Wide with a narrow Gate for Pedestrians to Access but no use for Bikes. There are Four ways to get through, Climb over them, Climb under,Try and Squeeze through the Pedestrian Gate,go to the Canal side and Lift the Bike around on the Water part. Some Parts of the Path Had Large Gravelly Stones or Hardcore and was Slippy in Parts ,while other Parts they had put down a very Smooth Surface for Bikes. I was glad my Raleigh Bike had Puncture Resistant Tyres. Two of the Cyclists had Bromptons the Norwegian and another Man ,the Stones did not seem to bother them to much.

It was lovely Travelling along the Towpath without the Hassle of Cars competing with you,and the Swans and Ducks and Water Hens Swimming by. We Ended up in The Grounds of Farmleigh beside and part of the Phoenix Park, The Former Guinness Family Mansion now Owned by the Government as a Place for Foreign Dignitaries to Stay in. But open to the Public on certain Days. There was the Farmers Market with all kinds of Food Stalls, so we got something to Eat and Drink and then had a Picnic and those with Sandwiches and Bickies shared them around. There was a Band Playing in the Marquee and some of us had a look at the Walled Garden with its Organic Vegetables. A very Pleasant Day out was had by all, very Enjoyable.
